Elon Musk owned X, formerly known as Twitter, has expanded its ‘Community Notes’ program to India. This feature allows X users to add context to a potentially misleading post on the microblogging platform. In particular, X was accused of aiding the spread of fake news. The activation of the Community Notes program in India comes at a crucial time when the world’s largest populous democracy is scheduled to hold Lok Sabha elections in seven phases between April 19 and June 1. . The results will be declared on June 4.

As always, we’ll be quality-checking to make sure notes are found helpful by people from different perspectives. “
What do X’s Community Notes do?
According to information on X’s help center, “Community Notes aims to create a better-informed world by empowering people on X to collaboratively add context to potentially misleading posts.”
How do X’s Community Notes work?
Contributors can leave notes on any post and if enough contributors from different viewpoints rate that note as helpful, the note is publicly displayed in a post.
X described Community Notes as a collaborative way to keep people better informed.
“Contributors are people like you. Anyone in X whose account meets the eligibility criteria can sign up to help. All contributors start with the ability to grade notes, and over time, can gain the ability to write,” the content on the sign- up page to join Community Notes read.
Grades are not selected by majority rule. Community Notes identifies notes that are found helpful by and for people with different viewpoints.
“X doesn’t choose what appears: the people do,” it said.
How to join X’s Community Notes as a contributor?
To join the Community Notes pilot program, the X account must have
-No rule violations on the platform since January 1, 2023
-At least six months on the platform
-The account should be linked to a verified phone number with a reliable phone carrier
-The number should not be associated with other ‘Community Notes’ accounts.
