New Delhi: India’s energy demand caught hold of coldness of winter In Decemberwith the consumption of dieselThere has been a decline in the prices of petrol and electricity due to reduced movement of people and goods due to reduced festive demand.
Government data showed power consumption fell 2.3% from a year earlier to 119 billion units (BU), the first decline since April 2023 when demand fell 1.5% to 130 BU. However, demand has seen a good pace of growth since then, rising to 22% in October.
Diesel consumption, a key indicator of economic activity, declined 7.8% from a year earlier, marking a sharp decline for the second consecutive month, industry data showed. However, sales fell less than 1% from November on a monthly basis.
Gasoline sales declined 1.4% from December 2022, the first annual decline in at least eight months. Sequentially, the decline of about 5% from November was sharper as demand ebbed at the end of the festive and holiday season. This decline has occurred despite good sales of cars.
In contrast, jet fuel sales rose 3.8% from a year earlier as people preferred to fly to avoid disruptions caused by fog in rail or road traffic. However, this increase was less than the 6% rise in consumption seen in November. Consumption of LPG, or domestic cooking fuel, remained in the positive zone by registering a marginal growth of a little less than 1%.
Diesel sales have been affected due to the cyclone and resulting floods in the southern region and traffic disruption due to fog in the north. Sequentially, the decline in power consumption was marginal from 119.6 BU in November. The government expects consumption growth to top 8% in 2022-23.
